How we count the ratings

The App Store shows ratings separately for each country. We query Apple’s public data for 16 countries and add up all countries that have ratings.

The average is weighted: a country with 16 ratings counts sixteen times as much as a country with one. This gives the figure shown in the badge.

Besides the stars, there are written reviews. We summarise their topics in our own words. A topic only appears if it comes up in at least two reviews.

Where the ratings come from

All ratings come from users on the App Store. We do not select any and do not change any. The only four-star rating is included in the average as well.

For each retrieval we keep a dated copy of the public data. The figures on this website come from the dated retrieval used when the page was last built. The date is shown next to the badge.

We do not check ourselves whether a rating comes from someone who actually used the app. We take the ratings unchanged from Apple’s public data; how Apple checks ratings is up to Apple.
